Nominal Size
Definition:
The rough-sawn size of a piece of lumber before the lumber is planed or dressed. The nominal size is usually greater than the actual dimension.
When sawn lumber (Nominal size) is seasoned, dressed or planed the size becomes smaller which is the ACTUAL SIZE.
example....
A piece of lumber 100x50 (2x4) which is the nominal, sawn size may become approx 90x45 (approx 1-1/2" x 3-1/2")
when it has been dressed or planed, which is the actual size.
