Plate
Definition:
The top or bottom horizontal framing member of the wall.
Sill plate: a horizontal member anchored to a masonry wall. Sole plate: bottom horizontal member of a frame wall. Top plate: top horizontal member of a frame wall supporting ceiling joists, rafters, or other members.
The horizontal pieces of lumber below and above the studs. The single piece below is called the sole plate. The two pieces above are called the top plate and the cap plate.
